History of BMW ZS1 Z

The Z1 could be BMW’s most exceptional car. With its futuristic prototype look, rather than a full-blown production model, this car comes of age as a classic car as it advances over 25 years of age.  The BMW Z1 continues to fascinate and engage classic car drivers all over the world. We love the mechanically retracting doors which can be left down whilst you drive, giving a thrilling feeling of the open road. The sporty car also comes with a convertible roof and sporty interior offering classic car fans a clear expression of individuality and fun on the road.

The Z1’s has achieved enduring appeal thanks to the 2.5 litre six-cylinder M20 power plant, also found in the world beating E30 325i. It could be said that along with its larger sibling, the (also six cylinder) M30 engine, the M20 helped establish BMW’s global reputation during their 80’s and 90’s purple patch, without which they would not be the world-dominating force that they are today. Stable, fast and dependable, with smooth power delivery and easy road handling, the M20 is without doubt one of the greatest engines of its era.

Considering the reinforcement requirements of a convertible, the Z1 is remarkably light – weighing in at a relatively light 1250kg which accentuates the sprightly feel of the drive. The lighter weight is due to the use of plastic body panels – an innovation only made possible by advances in technology available at the time – which BMW claimed could be removed in just 40 minutes and changed for another colour at will. In reality this is far removed from this claim, but having removed the panels, the car can be driven as a panel-less shell, though why anyone would want to do is perhaps a mystery!

Z1s have gained popularity greatly in recent years, and values have risen in line with demand, making this a great investment classic car. Many Z1s lack substantial history, and many have mileage discrepancies due to a common fault with speedometers, along with the fact that many have travelled from Europe and have undergone KMS-MPH conversions. However, this does not seem to affect people’s hunger for what is surely one of the most unusual and left-field automotive creations of its time. BMW did not go on to make a car as ‘different’ as the Z1 until the revolutionary i8, some 20 plus years later. By then the Z1 had become a true modern classic, and a vital element of BMW’s development as a world-beating and innovative car manufacturer.
